Hi Guys, Im delighted to have found ye. I can honestly say I didn't think I find such a active group based in Ireland. I'm living in Waterford and have from a early age been fascinated by metal detecting. Other then some cheap toy shop detectors in my early youth Im a complete newbie to the world of detecting. A motivation to get into it is something I can do with my son and get some much needed excise while doing it, I have my eye on Equinox 800 but I believe their is a waiting list. I would be delighted to meet some of you guys in person and pick up some tips and general info etc.

Hi hellfireie. Welcome to the forum and enjoy your new hobby. Make sure you are up to date on the law, and if you follow the law you will have a great time. Looking forward to seeing your finds..

Thanks Guys the warm welcome is much appreciated. My reading of the Irish law on medal detectors you shouldn’t really own one and fine and penalties could apply if your caught with one. How do guys get around it? I’m sure you get a few noisy people too getting their spoke in. I’d like to be able to enjoy my time out and about with my son without drawing a world of hassle on us. I know the Pros will out weight the Cons I just want to start on the best foot going forward

It's not illegal to own or operate a detector in this country.. it is highly illegal to go any where near the red or blue dots in the arc map on this forum.. stay well away.. it is illegal to dig items of archaeological interest but all other items are ok.. And thats all we are looking for or the odd bit of meteorite

Public beaches, pathways, right of ways, public parks etc are all fine to comb and private land with permission of the owner. Just avoid the areas mark in red & blue on the map by 100 meters?

100 meters? Would not like to put that to the test I would think they would take your detector. The easy way is to keep well away from those areas then you can feel safe.

As the lads said above. Don't feel like you have to look over your shoulder when beach detecting or detecting on farmland once you have the farmer's permission. If you get noseys asking what you're doing, you don't have to explain yourself unless it's a uniformed garda (who's probably responding to a nosey parker complaint in the first place). Be polite & just say you're looking for modern coins or euros. Enjoy the hobby with your son and show us your finds.

If by some mad chance you find something old try not to dig it and deffo don't run to a museum without talking to the lads here first. Be aware not taken note of this warning would be a big mistake on your part no hero stuff anonymous or otherwise.

I'd maybe give the public parks a miss.. the public would take offence to a bloke digging holes with a spade in "their" park.. more so than the dog walker letting the little pouch take a sh1t for the kids to step in.. Just ask a farmer or if you knew somebody who could get you onto a bit of land and start there.. if you can't hit a swim hole or beach..

Hellfire, there are a few detectors for sale on the Detectors for Sale section here. Or a few decent ones on www.adverts.ie. but of you've your heart set on an Equinox, don't stop.
