Hi Paddy, I started metal detecting in March of last year. I bought the Garrett Ace 250 for 230 euro off of Amazon. I really like it but I have never used it on a beach - apparently it doesn't perform well on wet sand. Here's a similar thread

Hi Paddy, 1. Spend at least €150 on a good detector 2. Get a spade to dig with, a comfortable height with a smallish head, like a Border spade 3. A bag for loot and empty cans That's the basics to start with.
See what metal detectors the online shops have to offer Watch some you tube reviews to see what is suitable for you
crawfordsmd charge £16 (Sterling) for delivery to Ireland Detecnicks charge £30 for delivery to Ireland Regton charge £20 for delivery to Ireland Joan Allen charges £25 delivery to Ireland

Welcome Paddy. Have a budget and kind of stick to it. Take a look at the ones on sale in the forum's Detectors for Sale section. Otherwise Adverts.ie and Amazon/Ebay and the ones Chewy listed above are trustworthy sites. Any questions about any adverts, ask here just to be sure because some machines are only going to ruin your interest in the hobby straight off. Whereabouts in the country are you? Some forum members in your area reading this might be able to help out.

Hi Paddy welcome to the forum. Have you some place in mind to detect? beach or land? How much you want to spend will be a big factor on what type of detector you can afford. If you never used a detector you could hire one for a weekend from one of the tool hire shops. It's not for everybody so it might be wise to see if you like the hobby...if you do you will be hooked.
Enjoy the forum!

You'll be detecting a lot of stuff, basically all your lead shot. LOL. TBH, apart from the odd bullet or musket ball, lead shot doesn't pop up on detectors. Like hunting, it's a great outdoor hobby. Look forward to seeing those finds.

I forgot about the cartridges. I was hoping you were one of those responsible shooters bringing the cartridges home. Well, in that case you'll be busy.

Just have a read through on the law of detecting before you land yourself into any kind of hassle.. Always make sure there are no protected sites around. Link on the FAQ section

The older ones are made of copper (or alloy) which are a nuisance cos I think I'd found a lovely coin until I'd dig it out. Newer ones are iron based and can be discriminated out. It's not just game hunters though Paddy. Look at all the bottle caps, milk bottle foil tops, cigarette foil, Wriggleys gum foil and all the other tins and farm animal medicine tubes dumped on farmland over the decades. And the museum folk think we just dig silver and gold every day.
