Hi all, I lost my gold claddagh ring today that has great sentimental value to me. I was training on a pitch in Phoenix Park today (19/11) and it was in my pocket but the pocket had a tear at the bottom. I noticed straight away after and searched the entire pitch but I couldn’t find it. I reckon it is buried from us running on it.
I can meet to point out the exact pitch but also have coordinates.
I understand that Phoenix Park is protected. I rang the rangers and asked if I found a metal detector would they allow me and they said there should be no issue getting permission for this but just to call the superintendent in the morning which of course I am willing to do if someone is available to help.
Please let me know if any more information is required. I would really appreciate any help anyone can offer. I always take the ring off and put it in the same zip pocket and put it back on straight away after but today left my jacket on with the rain and couldn’t believe when it was gone!
Thank you, Jenny

Update! I have received permission to use a metal detector in Phoenix Park if I organise a ranger to be present. If no one is available to help I wonder if any tips could be given about renting one and looking myself? I fear my complete lack of knowledge and experience metal detecting will leave me disappointed.

I'd love to help but I'm too far away and am hardly ever up that part of the country.
I'm sure there is someone here who might be able to help though.

Phoenix Park is absolutely no no no area for metaldetectors and presence of rangers didn't safe our back from trouble but there is a solution: if you ring to National Museum of Ireland and ask for advice probably they can issue licence to use detector there and if you happy to cover my petrol money I can help you but only Saturday or Sunday because of work Probably it will need 6-7 hours "in a worst scenario" depending on area to search

Hi, firstly thank you very much for the offer, I would of course be happy to cover petrol money. I have received permission from Park Management under an exemption for this case provided I arranged for a Ranger to be there. The Rangers seemed keen to help once I had permission and wouldn’t be digging up the whole field (I would think this isn’t necessary since it shouldn’t be buried very far, it only happened yesterday). I have this in writing from the superintendents office. Is there any Saturday that would suit you? I have this Saturday from 2pm (although would need to leave at 6pm) or before 10am (but would need to leave at 10.30 but could come back at 2pm and the following Saturday same times. I’m afraid I coach for most of Sunday so would be difficult. The area size is a small football pitch although I would have thought it fell early on so could start with the area we warmed up in which only a quarter of the pitch. Thank you

Probably will be good idea to contact national monument service for advice with your letter from superintendent because laws are very strict on detecting in Ireland

Hi, I didn’t contact them but did rent a detector today and tried to look for it but with no luck unfortunately Actually very bad idea , no one except minister can give you permission to use detector in protected places and superintendent give you wrong advice

I think we're all a bit wary on here, for good reason. But if the person who lost the ring and a park ranger are going to be there as well , I think everyone would agree that a ring with sentimental value is being looked for and not archaeological items. If I lived in Dublin if have no bother helping to look for it. But that's it's a personal choice for everyone I respect it.

I agree I don't think there would be any issue if the warden said it was ok. Would need him there or to write something to say it was ok to search for that item. If there were exceptions to the rules looking for this ring would be high on the list.
I think I remember years ago road workers finding historic remains along side the main road of the park. I know of somebody who detected st stephen's green a few years back as part of his work (or so he said). So it might not be as unusual as we seem to think.

You need to contact Irish monument service and get proper advice, actually licence to use metaldetector on protected land can be issued in a couple of days. After we can try to locate your ring
