Hello all,
Joined this great forum there during the week. Finally getting around to post.
I always had an interest in Metal Detectors since a kid - a old neighbour had one and I used to go with him to beaches. We'd find modern coins / scrap and the very odd bit of jewelry. But for whatever reason I never got around to getting involved over the years. I guess the laws here are quite punitive and I was always a bit unsure of them. But now with the years pushing on I've a little more time on weekends.
I live on a farm here and we're looking to find a run of old underground cables and a lost set of tractor keys so I decided to look into this again. After an online search I found this great site! Lots of good information here and I kinda got excited to go and try this hobby. I don't have a detector so going to hire one for weekend (basic model by all accounts) - but if it'll find the missing keys and buried cables I'll be happy
There are some old sheds that might be interesting to find old tools and scrap metal too.

But after reading up on this site and watching some of videos we might take a wander into the fields for a look for the craic.
There are no listed monuments nearby so we're safe thankfully not to disturb anything historical. All I want to do is to try out playing with the detector and let the kids have some fun too finding old bits of discarded metal. One of the good points mentioned here on this site is the scrap metal clean up can be beneficial for cattle - fair point tbh.
Anyway hello to all here and I'm off to make a bunch of rookie mistakes over the weekend and fill a bucket of scrap metal (hopefully).
I'll report back here with the experience. If things good ok I might be in the market for a better machine - another hobby to ruin the wallet

Take care and talk soon,
Cathal
