Hi all just seen this site from Facebook said I'd give it a look always liked the idea of metal detecting and finally looking into it now at 30. I don't have a metal detector yet so on the lookout and doing a bit of research on here for best bang for my buck for a beginner's detector that's not crazy money. Is there much people on here that detect around east cork youghal beach shannagarry area would be closest to me?and just a general question is earliest in morning best time to do metal detecting on beaches?

Welcome mark20. Best time to detect beaches? When tide is out. Keep any eye on the Detectors for sale section here and Adverts.ie for good used detectors, all types and prices.

hi Mark, welcome. I believe you need to spend at least €150 for a decent detector. Make sure your happy with it because you will be using it for many months or years. As you research the different machines you'll obviously want the better ones so figure out what your final budget is and save for that. Good starter brands Garrett (€150+) the Ace 250 is the most popular at €250 Minelab (€160+) the GoFind range is cheapest and very portable Whites (€150+) the Treasure Master is €250 You'll also need a bag for finds, a digging implement such as a border spade, and optionally some cut-resistant gloves. Eventually you'll learn about pinpointing targets, different soil types (ground balance), etc. This site will tell you what areas to avoid webgis.archaeology.ie/historicenvironment/More reading irishmetaldetecting.freeforums.net/thread/150/first-metal-detector

Hi Mark.. I'm further up the east coast but get to the beach once a week or so. I use "tides near me" app on google play and i try get there just as the tides is near full out.. i work between the full and low tide marks, it's the most refreshed part. Soon as you get started you'll be hooked. Enjoy
