Hi from Peterborough uk. I run a metal detecting club here in the uk and myself and some friends are planning a weeks holiday in Ireland which will include some metal detecting. I have been over many times in the past fishing and have some farmer friends there so land is not a problem. I am aware the detecting laws are different from the uk and will be researching this forum for as much information as possible.
Thank you malcb

Welcome to the forum. Yes law is very different. It's illegal to look for historical artifacts with a metal detector (without a licence) in Ireland. Modern coins, lost car keys etc is only thing you can look for without licence, and yes, there are loads of protected sites where you can't even be in possession of a metal detector. Need to make sure you are no where near any of them

Welcome guys. If you have farmland to detect on and there are no visible or registered monuments on it, you're ok. If you do find something archaeological you have 96 hours to report it. All junk is deemed finders keepers and can be brought back to Peterborough as souvenirs.
