hey everyone.just wondering about the legality of amateur detecting in ireland.i have pick up a cheap amateur detector[MD 4030]basically to make my dog walking adventures more interesting, but i am unsure if i would be within the law to do this.i have heard that you need a licence,i have also heard that only professional archeaologists are allowed them.any help to clear this up for me would be greatly apprieciated.

Hi fion52.. generally beaches are ok but you should check the link below for areas to be considered off limits. webgis.archaeology.ie/historicenvironment/Red and blue dots are a no go It's a great hobby and I'm sure you'll be hooked soon enough. Depends where your based you might get some permission form land owners if you can ask. Best of luck. Read the FAQ section for more.

Hi fion52, and welcome. Depending on where you are, beaches are ok and if you know any farmers, just pop over and ask politely. If you get permissions, unfortunately you must leave the doggie behind if there are sheep in your permissions fields.

You'll definitely have to get a licence though, unfortunately ! For your Dog!
