Hi duggy23x. I'm a northsider myself. We might bump into each other on a beach someday.. Just remember to leave the goodies for me.. You are free to dig aluminium and pulltabs.... Ha ha. Enjoy the hobby, you will be addicted before you know it.

Welcome to the forum duggy, do you already have a metal detector if you do what is it ? my tale is a bit long winded, my brother and i done some md 2015 2016 we bought the detector between us, it was always kept at my brothers house, cant remember the make offhand but the pinpointer and detector cost €350 approx, sadly my brother passed away in december 2016, recently his widowed wife contacted me to say that she has located the md, and wants to give it to me, i havent collected it yet but will so in the next day or so, on hearing that im hoping to go out and have another potter around or so with the md, so thats my story. duggy

You need to look at the protected areas before you go out. There is a link on this site that will show you. We call them blue and red dots...here is the link again. webgis.archaeology.ie/historicenvironment/ if you look at this and go looking for jewelry and modern coins you should be safe. I will go to donabate, portrane, Malahide etc. You don't always find much, but fresh air and exercise is always good.

Well that is because the warden did not know what he was talking about funny enough never seen a warden on that beach or any other. The last person they tried that with forced them to apologize and they were assured that it would never happen again. That is not to say an over zealous member of staff who may not be aware of the law could not make the same mistake again it could happen.. I have a document in my possession that states it is not against the law and that we are welcome on that beach and it's no more than I would expect. If it ever happens again make sure to be polite get a name and contact number and if you can a photo. Make it clear you are not looking for archaeological objects of any kind ask him if he can phone his boss to check he is correct to ask you to stop before you leave the beach. Make it clear you are aware legal advice was taken on this matter before and it was made clear metal detectorists are welcome and entitled detect on the beach. As stated above looking for jewellery and modern coins you should be safe but you cannot search for archaeological objects. Protected for birds dollymount is a bird sanctuary don't forget always ask for id before you talk and limit what you say and show nothing. I think malahide, portmarnock, howth, Sutton, and many others all go under that same council so a lot of guys would feel that if that if the wardens were correct just as well they are not.
