Hi folks, I'm really interested in starting metal detecting but really having a clue about the laws. Do you need a licence if you are detecting in fields around your house, with permission from the landowner of course. Don't know wherecto start, any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks

Welcome J5...no licence required or given out tbh, as we're all hobby detectorists and don't search for archaeological objects. Be sure to see the maps on red dot locations to avoid. Enjoy the hobby responsibly.

Thanks digthatone, was going to go out this weekend with my kids and the last thing I wanted to happen was the gárda to arrest me lol. I'm going to stick with the field beside my house for the time been. I will post how I get on 👍. Oh can I detect on beaches? Thanks

Hi Welcome,
As the lads have already stated:
It is not against the law to buy or own or even use a metal detector in Ireland providing it is done within the law. A licence is only required if you want to search for archaeological objects. Permits / licences are not generally given to members of the public.
Enjoy
