I am new to detecting, I bought the fisher f22 machine I also have the nokta makro on the way with the wireless headphones and pinpointer (should be here this week).
I've been down the park with the f22 today and getting used to the different vdi and tones. My question is that an aluminium can can ring up in the 30s 40s & 60s so I cant accurately notch aluminium without maybe loosing some good targets. Is it because they are different aluminium cans or is it machine related fault?

Welcome Freddo
What I do is lift the coil around 10 inches above the target and swing. If it still sounds like a target on the surface (loud). It's most likely a can but it could have good targets under it or beside so best to dig them up if you've the patience. The vdi's are always slightly different.

Thanks for the reply Paulie.
yes your right about the aluminium cans and pull tabs they always seem close to the surface with the odd exception.
So, if I notch all the numbers that the aluminium cans ring up at will I miss potentially good targets or is it safe to assume that say a gold ring or silver coin wont show up as the same numbers in the vdi?

I don't think it's a good idea to notch out pull tabs there could be a problem detecting the good stuff if you do so.

Best to dig everything freddo cause sometimes you'll be surprised I notch anything below 20 the cans can come in as the same reading as a coin so best to dig them

Great little shovel, light enough to carry round all day long and stands up to plenty of abuse, had same one for just over a year and its the job!
