Hi everyone, I'm new here and just looking for some advice. I want to buy a metal detector, it is primarily for looking for gold probably in rivers. I'm not looking for a top of the range detector but would like something that will do the job well... What does everyone use?

Not many people here are looking specifically "only" for gold...in ireland there are basically very small flakes of gold, so you will probably need a pretty high spec machine to be able to find them..equinox, or a pulse induction machine (also need to be waterproof...)

Hi norwaydigger, thanks for your reply. Do you know of a machine that might be suitable?

For the tiny flakes or small nuggets that you would expect to find I would suggest you use a coil with a higher frequency.. Choices.. Xp orx with the white hf coil Minelab nox 600 / 800 Or a fisher gold bug pro
They're not cheep machines.. but if thats your target, your wasting yor time with anything less

Hi I actually do hunt for gold here and use an Equinox 800. As Solo said because gold is so small here and also the you really need a high frequency VLF. Minelab equinox 800 or gold monster, not the 600 as it does not have a gold mode. XP Orx/Deus with hf coil. Whites Gmt. Fisher Gold Bug/Gold Bug 2, not the Pro as it only 19khz.
If you are on a budget, you should get a Whites Gmt or a Fisher Gold bug at a reasonable price, with the current market, you could pick up an XP Deus lite with hf coil very cheap.

Thanks solohunter and ringmoney. Do you know of anyone selling any of these detectors, even in good used condition?

You'll be able to pick up the equinox 800 from Colin in Northern Ireland. www.metaldetectorsalesni.comYou'll be waiting a while if you want one of those models used.
