Its an easy machine to set up really, just knock out the first notch or two because they are just ferrous tones. The ace will do quite well in the dry sand but will go mad on the wet (too many minerals). Look up utube see if you can get some examples. You'll do fine with it trial and error really but some advice starting out, dig pretty much everything you can, you'll soon learn the bad signals.

Welcome trieneragh1. Good machine the 250. Give it a go on pasture as well. Turn sensitivity up to top setting and drop it back a notch or two until the false signals are gone. Nothing worse than stopping every few swings to check falsies.

You're going to be amazed at the amount of sh1te that you'll pull up, truely amazed. But at least you'll have an idea how it got there. i show all the farmers everything i dig outta the ground and they can't believe it. Every now and again i'll find a piece of equipment that they're delighted to get back. You wont really need one of those edge digging tools for farm fields , as the ground is wet till summer now. Just decide what type of spade you want, a small or regular size one. I've been using this type of trowel since i started and its never let me down. Just get a holster or a finds bag that it can slide into. www.woodies.ie/true-temper-one4you-transplanting-trowel-377430Good luck !
