Hi there, I'm a member who joined looking for help finding my engagement ring, but I thought it would be polite to say hello also. I am not a detectorist myself although I find the hobby fascinating, and after watching dozens of YouTube videos of searches trying to make myself feel better this week, I have a huge respect for what you guys do! I also enjoy following mudlarking accounts on Instagram: I know it's a different thing, but I can relate to the thrill of discovery.
My username is after my dog, who does indeed have one floppy ear. Nice to meet you all.

Great introduction I am sure the lads will be happy to help if they can don't forget to take a few photos for our forum if you have success. Nothing we like more than happy endings.

Welcome onefloppyear, I hope you find the ring. you might also check in the door-well where the gap is, and try magnet fishing in the drain or along the path edge, If your friend is right about the metals being attracted to magnets. It doesn't have to be a special magnet, but if its very small you can put it into a wee plastic bag and tie a shoelace around it. I can mail you a small magnet (with a hole in it) if you want, from Dublin.

Thank you so much, everyone, for the welcome and good wishes! Chewy, thank you very much for your offer. I will see what tomorrow brings but might take you up on it. Hopefully I won't need to! I am also a Star Wars fan.

The magnet would be hit and miss as gold or silver will not be attracted. The best bet is the metal detector and pin pointer inside and outside the house. Rings that go down the sink tend to be caught in the sink trap a likely place if you washed your hands after the doggy doo doo. Something else to check is the gloves you used and where you removed them eg beside the bin and also in the bin. Remember what the eye might miss the detector or pointer will not. Think back anything else you might have done before you noticed it missing? baking a cake? peeling the spuds? washing the dog? kids? changing clothes? try retrace your steps you never know something might click or shine.

I actually realised the ring was gone before I had even put down the bag (or washed my hands, ack!) so at least I know that didn't happen. However, before the trip out, I might have gone to the loo, made a cup of tea, gone up to the room for a charger, that kind of thing. Most of the time I was just sitting on the couch typing. (Poor couch has been through a lot since then!) I've been circling the house trying to reenact the whole thing, who knows, as you said, something might just appear. But my money and hopes are on the little garden!

You might metal detect the dog aswel, just in case its in his belly. Its also possible that a bird fecked off with it, but hopefully not. There also might be a square metal shore in the back garden, it could be worth looking in that aswel, as metal can get trapped there for a while. Also, this might sound a bit silly, but anything where your hand moved in a sliding gesture, such as for example after opening a door, your hand slides off the handle. If the ring came off in such a way it could roll away from that area, under a fridge say. Check in the cutlery drawer, and around the legs of chairs etc.
