Hey everyone, I recently moved to Ireland and have been detecting for many years in other countries. All other research I've done online has claimed its outright illegal to metal detect in Ireland (except for beaches, but I am not very interested in beach detecting). This includes the National Museum of Ireland's website. The National Museum of Ireland's website states "the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht will not grant consents for the use and/or possession of metal detectors except to suitably qualified archaeologists or persons who will be working under professional on-site archaeological supervision." www.museum.ie/en-IE/Collections-Research/The-Law-on-Metal-Detecting-in-IrelandHowever, people on here seem to claim there is a way to do it legally? As much as I want it to be legal I have my suspicions on what you are claiming. Could some of you explain this? Thank you very much, Nick

Hi Nick. There might be some misconceptions about the legality (illegality) of the hobby but detecting open farmland with owners permission and public beaches are allowable. Like in our nearest neighbour the UK, and in other countries, there are rules that should be adhered to should anyone discover items of archaeological significance. For oldies like me it's getting out, getting some fresh air and casual exercise whilst enjoying a peaceful & harmless hobby, great for mind and body. The hobby isn't that popular here compared to the UK for instance, so there are no regular rallies or meets. Maybe you can ask in the ShoutBox below if there are any lads in your area willing to get you out for a few hours locally.
