Thank you gentlemen. Swinger it is the Vanquish 540. legbeforewicket, I came close to the equinox 600 but opted for this one instead.

Mine has cobwebs on it atm, so I hope your Vanquish gets more use! I really need to get out more. Now you have to be kind to those spiders, as a landlord you have responsibilities to re-house them to a cobweb of equal size and strength. Yep I went out very early this morning. First confusion......had it good ground balanced, sensitivity level excellent, found a squashed foil that gave a reading as if it was a tiny piece of broken gold, (1-3), then nothing but heaven-sent silence and then another two faint signals, but no readings on the screen. Checkedin all metal mode, still there, turned down sensitivity, still there but no screen readings. Kept going over and over, very faints signal but then dissappeared and then came back. Pin point worked so I dug. And dug, and dug and dug and dug, still there, and dug, then gone, then came back. At which point I gave up. This actually happened twice. That they were false signals is hard to believe.

You can get false signals mate, I've seen it myself.
There's a lot more qualified lads than me on here though who'd be better able to advise.

You don't normally need to dig deep and if you do it's likely to be a beer can or other large piece of rubbish metal. When things are hard to find in the sand or in soil they tend to be almost pinhead size you might never find them. Th ground could be mineralised ground this happens a lot and will cause false signals. All part of the learning process nothing to worry about. When you get enough hits from gold silver and copper and iron you will get to know in an instant or close enough to know what you are about to dig.

Welcome on board , minelab 600 if needed any help just send me message . Adam from Carlow Thank you Charcarlow. I only have one question about your machine, would the readouts on the digital display be the same as the Vanquish 540, I believe that there are only a couple of differences between yours and mine, but the tones and ID numbers would be identical. If so I have a query..... Al foil and Al foil that is flattened and squashed and even foil that is part paper all turn up ID values anywhere between 8 and 20, I have already seen it like this since I am digging up rubbishy stuff on purpose. The issue I have is this, my tests on gold, broken gold and all parts of silver churn up interesting IDs. For example small Gold registers as junk Iron if in any mode except jewelry, silver registers 25/26 and 11/10/12/15 depending upon copper content. All lead objects register a nice constant 13/14 or 16/17. So making a discrimination pattern is pretty much redundant and pointless. What is your experience if I may ask?
